The biggest goal for the Creative and Academic Writing Camps is to cultivate ingenuity through writing. To attain this goal, high interest topics are used and interactive activities are adopted to create a fun-filled learning environment. While building divergent thinking and ingenuity is the ultimate goal, students will be guided through a structured writing curriculum, which is a foundation to attain the goal. Students will bring home writing projects that they will take pride at the end of each weekly camp.
Descriptive Writing: 6/17-6/21, M-F, 9:00 a.m. – 3:00 p.m.
This course is designed to improve visualization skills and enhance descriptive writing. Students will use sensory words, similes, metaphors, and personification to describe life’s big and small moments captured in art and photography.
Do you have a great story in mind that you’d just love to get published? Learn what it takes to create a story – from pre-writing, drafting, and editing, to publishing your final draft. You will study different elements in storytelling, such as character development, setting, plot, and conflict.
Publish a Newspaper: 7/8-7/12, M-F, 9:00 a.m. – 3:00 p.m.
Have you ever wondered what it would be like to work in a newsroom, getting that hot story to press? In this class, you will put on a reporter’s cap, roll up your sleeves, and write those headlines, news stories, features, reviews, comics, and ads.
Write a Speech & Public Speaking: 7/15-7/19, M-F, 9:00 a.m. – 3:00 p.m.
Students will learn the steps necessary to brainstorm, prepare, organize, and present a speech effectively in a fun, creative activity designed to capture their imagination and delight.
Expository Writing: 7/22-7/26, M-F, 9:00 a.m. – 3:00 p.m.
Students will put their essay writing and presentation skills to the test when they research an interesting topic and then present their findings in an effective, engaging way to an audience.
Forum on Campus Life: 7/29-8/2, M-F, 9:00 a.m. – 3:00 p.m.
Students will learn persuasive writing, presentation, and public speaking by focusing on one or more contemporary campus issues. Students will also learn to organize information and present that information persuasively from their own perspective while at the same time considering the perspective of others. There will also be chances to have small-group discussions about such issues to gain ideas and perspectives that will be turned into written materials.
Journalism: 8/5-8/9, M-F, 9:00 a.m. – 3:00 p.m.
In this course, students become writers and copy editors as they learn how to write headlines, stories, properly quote sources, write ad copy, conduct an interview, and even create comics!
The Persuasive Power of Commercials; 8/12-8/16, M-F, 9:00 a.m. – 3:00 p.m.
Through the process of creating a promotional brochure, students learn the essential skills of persuasive writing, such as creating effective sentence imagery, analyzing the audience, and supporting personal opinions with reasons and examples. They will examine professional brochures as examples and learn what makes them effective marketing tools.
